History of Conservatories

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Conservatories have been around for hundreds of years, being used for many different things as the times have changes, advancing over the years into what we use today for anything from playrooms to dining rooms. It all started in the 16th century, when they were developed as a way to cultivate plants in area that were often buffeted by harsh weather that would kill them. They could also be used to grow plants in colder areas of the world that needed more heat. People took advantage of the sun to add a level of luxury and usefulness to society.

Over the last few centuries, this greenhouse idea has sparked a different architectural use for such sunrooms. They have evolved into places for human use, as sitting rooms or lounges. Many people today use the terms sunroom and conservatory interchangeably, but conservatories in history were generally larger in stature and decorated in styles from the eras in which they were built, such as the Victorian.

Conservatories have managed to keep their original uses and elegance while becoming smaller and more affordable, which has led to their becoming a common addition to homes today. Their style gives you a feeling of eras long passed, while their construction provides you with a more comfortable, modern environment, that you can take advantage of however you want to.
